prg.ai newsletter #60

The Czech AI ecosystem is thriving. The Map of Czech AI has surpassed the 500-entry milestone, the Czech Telecommunication Office is assembling a new AI team, and we bring news on the launch of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence, as well as a record-breaking eighth year of prg.ai Minor.

🔥 AI in the Spotlight

National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCUI) launches at CTU

It will bridge top-tier research with the specific needs of the Czech state and industrial partners. The new platform will focus on nine research areas, including healthcare, transport, and energy. A total of 10 prg.ai members and partners are involved in the project, with our initiative being the sole representative of the non-profit sector. “Supporting projects that connect excellent research with industrial practice is a priority for the Czech Technology Agency. NCUI demonstrates that this model of co-operation has strong potential in the Czech Republic,” adds Prof. Petr Sklenička, Chairman of the Czech Technology Agency.

Public officials now have their own AI guide and “ten commandments”

The Czech administration has published a 45-page guide to the ethical and effective use of AI in public administration. The document summarises practical recommendations that every civil servant in the Czech Republic should know, from verifying outputs to transparent communication and protecting sensitive data. Alongside it, a more concise Ten Commandments offers the core rules in a short and accessible format. prg.ai also contributed to the preparation of both documents.

Join the AI team at ČTÚ (Czech Telecommunication Office)

Thanks to the AI Act, the Czech Telecommunication Office has been entrusted with part of the regulation of artificial intelligence. It is currently assembling a team responsible for AI regulatory oversight in the Czech Republic. In addition to an analyst and an AI methodologist, they are also looking for specialists in national and international co-operation. The new colleagues are expected to take up their roles on 1 July.

The Map of Czech AI surpasses the 500-entry milestone

Five hundred and seven. That is the current number of entries featured on the Map of Czech AI on the CNAIP website. Alongside more than five hundred Czech research groups, companies, and initiatives, you can now also explore over 80 case studies that the Czech Republic can be rightfully proud of — from AI receptionists and archaeological survey tools to autonomous airport defence against drones.

European AI Gigafactories may come in two types

According to information published on LinkedIn by CEE AI Ambassador Jan Kavalírek, two categories of installations are currently being considered: smaller AI Gigafactories for small and medium-sized states, and larger AI Gigafactories for larger ones. This split could better reflect local needs and circumstances. However, everything remains under negotiation at the European Commission level and nothing has been finalised yet. As a reminder, the Czech Republic is currently discussing a possible joint application with Poland, as well as the potential sharing of capacities with Slovakia.

AI in Public Administration 2026: We Are on the Right Track

AI is becoming part of everyday work in Czech public offices, but in many places, we are only at the beginning. That was the gist of contributions at this year’s AI in Public Administration 2026 conference. As event partners, we had the opportunity, alongside the Czech Government Commissioner for AI, Lukáš Kačena, to present an overview of what has changed over the past year and what the state’s plans are for this year. The flagship event, held at Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle, also caught the attention of CNN Prima News.

AI reality in small businesses: AMSP presents survey results

The Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (AMSP) published the results of a survey mapping where AI is genuinely helping today and what barriers it faces. The survey describes the prevailing phenomenon as a “lack of imagination” — businesses are aware of AI tools but struggle to deploy them effectively. The main culprit is a lack of time caused by demanding day-to-day operations. The results were released at an online conference held as part of the AMSP Year of AI initiative, where we, together with Brno AI, introduced the CNAIP project, the Map of Czech AI, and selected SME case studies. Did you miss it? No problem — the full recording is available on YouTube.

We joined an open letter to the Council of the European Union

The current wording of the Digital Omnibus compromise text brings excessive caution and additional layers of bureaucracy instead of simplification. Such an approach does not support European digital ambitions — on the contrary, it hampers them. For both Czech and European companies, it brings further legal uncertainty and unnecessarily increases compliance costs. You can read the full text of the open letter on the website of the AI Chamber, which led the initiative.

Thank you for another pleasant prg.ai breakfast

Dozens of people who create and nurture the Czech AI ecosystem gathered at Kampus Hybernská for our regular meeting over coffee and good food. FIT CTU student maps cities using Google reviews

The internet today contains a vast number of reviews of restaurants, cafés, and tourist spots. On their own, these reviews offer only a limited view, but their collective analysis can reveal broader characteristics of different parts of a city. That is exactly whatproject by FIT CTU student Adam Čapka explores. “The goal of the research was to design a methodology that can automatically create geographical regions with similar characteristics from a large number of text reviews. The result is a thematic map of the city, showing wider areas with a similar character,” explains the researcher.

She’ll advise followers on how to get their passwords in order and how to resist apparent pressure.

From tables to understanding: why data alone is not enough

It’s not enough to have “AI-ready data” — what matters is giving it genuine business context. That sums up the main idea of an expert meeting organised by PwC, Collibra, and Škoda Auto last month. The discussion showed how a semantic layer in Collibra can connect physical data with its business meaning, helping both people and AI make better decisions. There were also concrete demonstrations of working with logical data models and recommendations on how business stakeholders and data architects can find common ground.

How to handle AI in public institutions?

An expert seminar held at our partner CRA looked for the answer. The Czech Government Commissioner for AI Lukáš Kačena reiterated his vision of building not just a digital state administration in the Czech Republic, but an agent-based one. The key, in his view, is not isolated chatbots at each ministry, but a coordinated approach based on shared data and infrastructure.
