Natural Language Processing

NPFL124

This course is a very compact overview of the most important areas of natural language processing and computational linguistics, taught collectively by several professors and researchers, each covering their own main area of expertise. No sacrifices are made in terms of depth of the content: the lectures include plenty of mathematical formulas and the exercises are packed with practical tasks.

Starting with the very basic and still highly effective concept of language modeling, we go over linguistic data sources to linguistic processing (morphological and syntactic analysis), towards our first practical application: information retrieval.

Deep learning has radically changed the landscape in many areas of NLP. We delve into the technical details, the specifics of deep learning in NLP, including the need to produce highly structured outputs. The prime application discussed is machine translation (MT), and you will get to train your own MT system during the exercises.
